About this map
Every dot is a real observation uploaded to iNaturalist by a citizen scientist in New Zealand. Green pins are natives and endemics, tan pins are introduced species. Click a pin to see the photo. “Iconic natives” narrows things to the birds most Kiwis would recognise: tūī, kererū, pīwakawaka, bellbird, kākā, kea, kiwi, ruru, takahē and a handful of others.
Coverage is uneven — city birds are over-reported because that’s where the photographers are. Remote South Island and Fiordland populations are real but under-sampled here. Treat this as “what people are noticing”, not a full census.
