Oreti Beach is a swimming beach in Southland. The live panel above shows today's swim score, water temperature, wave height, wind, UV, and a four-day forecast. It uses the same Open-Meteo marine and weather data we use on the main beach dashboard, and pre-selects this beach automatically.

About the beach

Oreti Beach is Southland's main coastal beach — a 26-kilometre west-facing stretch running north from the Bluff, famous as where Burt Munro did his speed runs in the 1920s. The water is the coldest on this list.

When it swims best

January through February for the hardy. Water temperatures rarely exceed 15 °C.

What to watch for

Open ocean, no lifeguard patrols, and genuinely cold water. This is a scenic walk-and-paddle beach for most people, not a long swim.

Water quality

Swim scores on this page combine live weather and marine conditions but do not include bacterial water-quality grades. Before swimming — particularly within 48 hours of heavy rain — check the LAWA site for the most recent E. coli and enterococci readings at this beach: lawa.org.nz/explore-data/swimming.
